Jess Bauer, Deputy Director of Berkeley Summer Sessions Within the Division of Summer Sessions, Study Abroad & Lifelong Learning (SSALL)
Jess Bauer has an extensive background in education, beginning with her career in secondary teaching before transitioning to higher education. Jess holds a B.A. in English from the University of California, Davis; a secondary teaching credential from San Francisco State University; and a Master’s degree in Educational Policy Studies, emphasis Global Studies in Education, from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her thesis, “Scaffolding the Experience: An Examination of Study Abroad and Curriculum Integration,” focused on the importance of prioritizing, integrating and valuing study-abroad experiences as a critical component of a well-rounded education.
Jess has been at UC Berkeley for more than 12 years, joining the online learning team at UC Berkeley Extension before moving to SSALL, where she has worked on study-abroad programs, managed division-wide projects, overseen policy analysis and implementation efforts, and developed new programs for a variety of student populations. In her current role, Jess manages a portfolio of programs and areas, including Freshman/Transfer/Global Edge, Pre-College Scholars, Fall Program for Freshmen, Berkeley Changemaker—Oakland and Summer Minors/Certificates, as well as summer online learning, risk management and business resumption. She is a member of the SSALL-University Extension leadership team where she is responsible for developing and implementing a strategic vision for Summer Sessions and its special programs. In addition to her work, Jess enjoys traveling the world; reading biographies; taking long walks; and spending time with her partner, son and the family cat, Eli.
Justin Oliver, New Student and Pre-College Programs Administrator and Lead Diversity Officer for Summer Sessions & Study Abroad at UC Berkeley
In his administrator role, Justin Oliver manages a portfolio of innovative academic summer programs for newly admitted UC Berkeley students and the Pre-College Scholars program for high school students. In his role as Lead Diversity Officer, he works in collaboration with his colleagues and leadership to create a more accountable, diverse, inclusive and supportive environment for underrepresented students and staff members. A Western New York native, Justin earned his B.A. in Communications and Master’s of Public Administration from SUNY Brockport.
